SUMMARY

The second of the Qualifying Finals sees a battle of the Magpies, the Southern and Northern Magpies are going to duke it out in the their first finals clash since Devonport were known as the Power back in 1997. That clash was the First Semi Final and it too was played at Devonport Oval, Glenorchy ran out winners 22.9.141 to Devonport 7.11.53 in front of 1,615 people.

Fast forward now to 2010 and this battle will be only the third time the sides have faced off since the inception of the new TSL. The clashes are tied at 2 apiece with the Northern Magpies claiming the points back in Round 9 giving their Southern rivals a bit of a touch up.

Devonport that day set up their win in the first quarter, booting six goals to none to sey up a led that was never threatened. Devonport had five multiple goal kickers, led by champion centre half forward Ben Reynolds with three, in an even team performance. Glenorchy had suffered it's third straight loss and was looking like falling out of the top six with Hobart a chance to have locked up the sixth spot but Lauderdale had saved the Southern Magpies by beating the Tigers.

Glenorchy had only 3 wins from the first nine rounds, which was was starting to look like a way back for Glenorchy who had been last years minor premiers the year before, and looked like dropping out. But oh how the table has turned for Glenorchy, a few wins on the board and now they are able to say they have a double chance in the finals alongside Devonport.

Last season though Devonport looked like they were going to be watching the finals on the sidelines as well, as they had slumped from 2nd to 6th and couldn't buy a win, but they managed to get over the line and managed to set up a date with the Blues, who they knocked out of the finals.

Last weekend both Glenorchy and Devonport needed wins to keep a double chance alive, Glenorchy however needed Devonport to win more as the Bombers had a better percentage then them on the ladder. Devonport were wasteful in front of goal with just 8 goals from 30 scoring shots, with Ben Reynolds the only Magpie able to score multiple goals.

Young midfielder Rhys Mott was against named Devonport's best player this was the 7th time the young player was named best in 11 games. Glenorchy continued their domination of the Demons a feat that goes back to the end of the Premier League with a 12 point win. Glenorchy dominated the first half, but North Hobart fought back in the game to lead in the last quarter, but their surge was only short-lived as Glenorchy rebounded again with Jonathon Bowring leading the way with four goals, he was assisted by ruckman Simon Spencer who dominated in the ruck.

It is a remarkable performance given the roller-coaster ride Glenorchy have been on through the home and away season that saw them a chance to miss finals action during the season. Now for the first time in the history of the TSL we see two teams named Magpies battle it out, and you just know the feathers are going to fly during this contest.

Devonport have injury concerns with defenders Brett McCall, and Brad McDonald still under injury clouds, Glenorchy lost Daniel Muir, to a suspension and David O'Garey to a hamstring injury. the game should come down to the final quarter, even the final moments of the game, home ground advantage might not be enough for Devonport to get over the top of the fast finishing Glenorchy side.


PLAYER TO WATCH

Rhys Mott (Devonport) – The young midfielder has been in very good form as mentioned above, he's keeping his name around ready to be drafted in November. But first he will be a man Glenorchy are going to have to look to tag out of the game if they are going to be a chance to win that midfield battle.

Simon Spencer (Glenorchy) – A man that is going to be battling Jaye Bowden for the Glenorchy best and fairest, and he's going to be a key there in the middle for the Magpies. Taking over from Andrew Nash who has retired, Simon came back to the Magpies last season, and he has not put a foot wrong since he got himself back into the side. There were other names that could have been the player watch for Glenorchy but he's one that the Pies will want to play well.


QUESTION MARKS

Devonport had a lucky escape last weekend, their inaccuracy could have almost have cost them the double chance, but can the Northern Magpies handle the big game pressure? Once the Roos piled on the pressure the Magpies started to fall away, will this be another problem for them?

Glenorchy think they are a chance in this one, as do Devonport, Glenorchy too could have had a massive win over North Hobart if they managed to kick straight, their accuracy has been an issue but has yet to cost them, can this young Magpie lineup step up and claim a finals win, which otherwise looked impossible last time they played Devonport?


WHO WILL WIN AND WHY

The Magpies are going to win this, that's a given, but it's not easy to tip a winner in this clash at first glance you would think the Northern Magpies have it all over Glenorchy. But Glenorchy have started to stand tall, they lost a lot of experience when Piuselli, and Kaye left, and with Kameric out, Moles out, Muir out, O'Garey out, they are again relying on their never say die attitude that has started to come to the surface in the second half of this season. The loss against Hobart threatened to derail the Southern Magpies' finals campaign, but they rallied against Lauderdale, and steadied themselves against North Hobart.

But Devonport at home should be too strong for Glenorchy, it's not going to be Glenorchy;s season this season and at an unbiased view I think the Northern Magpies are going to go onto next week with a win. It should be closer then the 50 point win the Northern Magpies go earlier in the season, Glenorchy were suffering flatness and may need to look at possibly working harder in the pre-season.
