Why not have a chatbox down the bottom, it will keep people on the site for a prolonged time if they are talking to someone.
Also display members online in last hour, it makes it look more active.

I might bring back the members in the last hour thing. I took it away because as we were becoming more and more inactive it didn't look that flash. Oh and about the chatbox, for now it is a no but we'll see.

Members in the last 24 hours thing will be brought back when we get more active, which is happening at the moment.
